Retail Therapy for Friday: The hunt for a kitchen rug

I have been looking for a nice kitchen rug for months.

You would think finding a fab kitchen rug would not be that hard, but apparently it is.

Or maybe I am just really high maintenance when it comes to rugs.

Probably the latter.

I wanted an over-sized rug with a dark background to hide kitchen stains.

I didn’t want to pay a lot, of course.

Anyway I walked into Marshall’s Homegoods on Wednesday, and it looked like the mecca for all cool kitchen/accent rugs.

Most were $19.99 to $29.99.

I choose this one because:

#1. It matched my kitchen curtains.

#2. It had a dark background but still has vibrant colors.

#3. It was super plush which would make washing dishes while standing on it almost luxurious; the key word there is “almost.”

#4. I liked that it was sorta unusual and not everyone has it; aka it didn’t come from Target.

Here it is:

I placed it right in front of the sink.

And it really ties in well with my kitchen curtains, which my mom made.

The curtains are simple lined panels made from fabric remnants from a few of my decorating jobs.

Please don’t judge me because of my apothecary jar full of sweet ‘n low.

And while editing these pictures I was reminded of how badly we need to paint our cabinets.

And how much we need to replace our countertops, backsplash etc….

One thing at a time, one thing at a time……

Happy Friday!

  1. Great rug! I have been looking for a rug for my entryway. I am not a very confident decorator so even when I find something I like, I tend to doubt myself. So here we are one month later and still no rug. I can’t decide if I should go with a bright colorful rug or a basic neutral rug. Our entryway is really too small for any type of table or bench so I think a colorful rug would be nice. On the other hand, a basic neutral rug might make the entryway look larger. Any advice? Thank you!

    1. I am usually on the fence when it comes to neutral rugs vs colorful ones. I own A LOT of sea grass rugs because I love how they go with anything, but if you don’t have a lot going on in your entry way and don’t want to overwhelm the space I would go with maybe a colorful rug but just in two colors? That way your entry way does not look like a circus, but it still has a pop of color. I can send you a couple links if you need some inspiration. :)

  2. LOVE LOVE the rug…… makes me smile and hopefully you too when you have to do the dishes. Why is it rugs are so hard to buy????However I found a great big wool rug at Habitat….have you cleaned wool rugs or do you know much about them? Lots of advice on the internet but it is conflicting so just thought I would ask. So glad to know i am not the only one who struggles when it comes to buying rugs!!!

  3. Okay, i have narrowed my search down to three rugs. Actually two because one of them is too big. Anyway, thanks for your advice and inspiration. It was very helpful!!
